Kathryn Brenzel

Reporter for NJ Advance Media

What you do in your current position?
I’m currently working as a reporter for NJ Advance Media, covering northern Hudson County for NJ.com and The Star Ledger. I previously worked as a crime reporter for The Express-Times and as a reporter for Law360. I graduated from The College of New Jersey in 2011, with a double major in English and Journalism. In May, I recieved my M.S. Degree in Journalism from Columbia University.

Most important skills used today?
Honestly, basic writing and reporting skills are still the most important. Being able to shoot video, take pictures and create data visualizations are extremely important, but they still need to be backed by solid reporting skills and clear, concise writing.

Favorite memories of TCNJ JPW program or serving on student media?
I spent most of my undergraduate time in the basement of the Browser Student Center working for The Signal. I learned so much about reporting and editing while working for the paper, and I made some good friends.

While working as the Arts and Entertainment editor, my favorite interview subject was Joel McHale. He was very kind and funny in person, though he did tell me I probably didn’t have any friends when I told him I didn’t watch “Community.” He was joking, I think.

Advice for current students?
Firstly, write for the Signal, or another student publication. It really opens up a lot of future opportunities by giving you hands-on experience. Secondly, get yourself as familiar as possible with computer programming languages. Or, at least, familiarize yourself with examples of digital virtualizations (ProPublica, The Guardian, Syria Deeply) to get an idea of what can be done with data. These kinds of representations are becoming a crucial part of daily reporting, and if you are able to be a one-woman show, who can write, report, code and shoot video, you’re going to be in demand. Not to mention, with a broader tool kit, you’ll be able to tell stories in the best possible way.
