Hilarey Wojtowicz

What do you do in your current position?

I am currently a Managing Editor at Odyssey, a social media platform that works to democratize content and offer a variety of opinions and perspectives on all topics. I manage a team of seven assistant managing editors, leading them to manage the creators who create content for Odyssey’s platform on a weekly basis. We actually have creators from TCNJ creating content on a weekly basis, which allows them to work directly with a trained media professional in New York City to maximize their writing skills, video skills, editing skills, social media skills and personal brands.

What is your favorite part about your job?

I love helping people grow in their roles. I work with my team of assistant managing editors to become better editors, learn more about social media exposure for content, and even just how to have effective communication with the 250+ creators that they each manage every week. I’m also exposed to many different parts of my company, which is helping me learn how a successful media company is built from the ground up.

What made you choose journalism?

I love being able to help people understand what is going on in their communities and across the nation and world. Information is so important for people when it comes to making decisions for their families, themselves and anything in life. Content can really help people be better people, and through journalism, we can do just that. Providing information is amazing.

Tell us about the importance of getting involved in student media at TCNJ.

While at TCNJ, getting involved is the first thing any and every student should do. I was able to join the school newspaper, The Signal, the online magazine, Her Campus, plus additional clubs and organizations such as club soccer and Residential Education and Housing. Through all of these experiences, I was able to build a resume with experience writing, editing, using a CMS, laying out and designing pages, and managing a team of people which helped me land internships in New York City at Woman’s Day and Good Housekeeping magazines, both of which are brands within Hearst. These experiences helped me get my first job after college and is something I look back on to this day. I’m so thankful that TCNJ helped me accomplish so many so many of my goals, and it gave me foundation I needed to launch a successful career.
