Social Media Minor

The Social Media minor equips students with the strategic and creative skills needed to navigate today’s digital communication landscape. Through coursework in content creation, audience engagement, analytics, and platform strategies, students learn to build brand presence, manage online communities, and create compelling digital narratives. These skills are essential for careers in social media management, digital marketing, public relations, content strategy, and brand communications across all industries.

Requirements

The minor requires five course units.

Communication Studies Course (1 course unit)

  • COM 201: Social Media: History Theory Practice

Marketing Course (1 course unit)

Select one course:

  • MKT 384: Digital Marketing
  • MKT 370: Marketing and Social Media

Journalism Course (1 course unit)

  • JPW 320: Social Media Strategy

Electives Courses (2 course units)

Select two additional courses from the following:

  • COM 220: Editing for Social Media
  • COM 371: Strategies of Public Relations
  • COM 394: Global Health and Risk Communication
  • JPW 309: Media Ethics
  • MKT 384: Digital Marketing Strategy
  • MKT 370: Marketing and Social Media
  • BUS 380: Law, Technology, and Business

How to Apply

Follow these two simple steps:

Step 1: Complete the Application Form

  • Download and fill out the Change of Minor Form
  • Select “Add Minor”
  • We will obtain the department signature for you

Step 2: Upload Your Materials

Application Timeline and Next Steps

We accept applications on a rolling basis throughout the year. However, minors must be declared at least one semester prior to graduation.

After you submit your application:

  • The department reviews your application
  • Once approved, your minor will appear on PAWS

The process takes about 2 weeks (longer during registration periods).
