COM 391 Independent Study allows you to pursue specialized topics beyond the regular curriculum through research, primary source reading, or fieldwork. Work one-on-one with a faculty mentor to design a customized learning experience that aligns with your academic interests and career goals.
Am I Eligible?
Before applying, make sure you meet these requirements:
Academic Requirements:
- Completed at least 14 course units (at least 4 at TCNJ)
- Minimum GPA of 2.5
Credit Limits:
- Maximum 1.5 units of independent study per semester
- Minimum 12 hours of work per week per course unit earned
Additional Considerations:
- Check your course load – you need to apply for course overload if this puts you over 4.5 units
- If planning a summer or winter independent study, be aware that tuition payment is required
How to Apply
Step 1: Find a Faculty Sponsor
- Identify a faculty member whose expertise aligns with your proposed project.
- Discuss your idea with them to confirm they can supervise your independent study.
Step 2: Develop Your Proposal
Work with your faculty sponsor to create a detailed proposal that includes:
- Project description – What will you study or create?
- Time breakdown – How will you allocate time to each component?
- Your preparation – What coursework or experience prepares you for this project?
- Meeting schedule – How often will you meet with your faculty sponsor?
- Timeline & milestones – What are your key deadlines?
- Evaluation methods – How will your work be assessed? (paper, presentation, performance, etc.)
Credit guideline: Plan for a minimum of 12 hours of work per week per course unit.
Step 3: Complete the Application Form
- Download Application for Independent Study Enrollment
- Complete the form with your faculty sponsor
- Get your faculty sponsor’s signature on the completed form
Step 4: Submit Your Materials
- Upload your proposal and signed application form to our online portal: CJF Forms Upload
- The department will obtain remaining signatures for you
Application Timeline and Next Steps
Application must be submitted by the end of the add/drop period for the semester you wish to take the independent study.
After You Submit Your Application:
- The department reviews your application
- You’ll receive a decision via your TCNJ email
- Once approved, your enrollment will appear in PAWS
The application process takes about 2 weeks (longer during registration periods).
