Independent Study

COM 391 Independent Study allows you to pursue specialized topics beyond the regular curriculum through research, primary source reading, or fieldwork. Work one-on-one with a faculty mentor to design a customized learning experience that aligns with your academic interests and career goals.

Am I Eligible?

Before applying, make sure you meet these requirements:

Academic Requirements:

  • Completed at least 14 course units (at least 4 at TCNJ)
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5

Credit Limits:

  • Maximum 1.5 units of independent study per semester
  • Minimum 12 hours of work per week per course unit earned

Additional Considerations:

  • Check your course load – you need to apply for course overload if this puts you over 4.5 units
  • If planning a summer or winter independent study, be aware that tuition payment is required

How to Apply

Step 1: Find a Faculty Sponsor

  • Identify a faculty member whose expertise aligns with your proposed project.
  • Discuss your idea with them to confirm they can supervise your independent study.

Step 2: Develop Your Proposal

Work with your faculty sponsor to create a detailed proposal that includes:

  • Project description – What will you study or create?
  • Time breakdown – How will you allocate time to each component?
  • Your preparation – What coursework or experience prepares you for this project?
  • Meeting schedule – How often will you meet with your faculty sponsor?
  • Timeline & milestones – What are your key deadlines?
  • Evaluation methods – How will your work be assessed? (paper, presentation, performance, etc.)

Credit guideline: Plan for a minimum of 12 hours of work per week per course unit.

Step 3: Complete the Application Form

Step 4: Submit Your Materials

  • Upload your proposal and signed application form to our online portal: CJF Forms Upload
  • The department will obtain remaining signatures for you

Application Timeline and Next Steps

Application must be submitted by the end of the add/drop period for the semester you wish to take the independent study.

After You Submit Your Application:

  1. The department reviews your application
  2. You’ll receive a decision via your TCNJ email
  3. Once approved, your enrollment will appear in PAWS

The application process takes about 2 weeks (longer during registration periods).
