Professional Writing Minor

The Professional Writing minor provides theoretical grounding and practical experience in professional communication across traditional and digital platforms. Students develop versatile writing skills applicable to journalism, public relations, advertising, marketing communications, and content strategy. Through collaborative projects with students in other media-related disciplines, you’ll gain real-world experience creating compelling content for diverse audiences and purposes—skills essential for careers in corporate communications, nonprofit organizations, media companies, and marketing agencies.

Requirements

The minor requires five course units.

  • JPW 250: Writing for User Experience

Professional Writing Options (3 course units)

  • JPW 208: Digital Journalism
  • JPW 209: Broadcast Journalism
  • JPW 251: Feature Writing (Same as IMM 240)
  • JPW 311: News Editing and Production
  • JPW 320:  Social Media Strategy
  • JPW 350: Magazine Writing
  • JPW 370: Topics in Journalism
  • JPW 371: Topics in Professional Writing
  • JPW 390: Beats and Deadlines
  • JPW 399: Internship in Journalism or Professional Writing
  • JPW 475: Data Journalism (Same as IMM 443)

Note: A minimum of two courses at 300-400 levels.

Elective Course (1 course unit)

  • Any LIT, CWR, or LNG course by advisement
  • Any IMM course not listed above
  • AAV 251: Design Fundamentals
  • BUS 200: Legal and Regulatory Environment of Business
  • ECO 101: Principles of Economics: Micro
  • COM 212: Introduction to TV Studio
  • COM 371: Strategies of Public Relations
  • TST 160: Creative Design

How to Apply

Follow these two simple steps:

Step 1: Complete the Application Form

  • Download and fill out the Change of Minor Form
  • Select “Add Minor”
  • We will obtain the department signature for you

Step 2: Upload Your Materials

Application Timeline and Next Steps

We accept applications on a rolling basis throughout the year. However, minors must be declared at least one semester prior to graduation.

After you submit your application:

  • The department reviews your application
  • Once approved, your minor will appear on PAWS

The process takes about 2 weeks (longer during registration periods).
